Firefly Festival 2024

Jun 08 All day

Experience the magic of hundreds of thousands of fireflies filling the trees beginning at dusk and putting on a show of nature’s fireworks with their bioluminescent blinking. It is a mind-blowing spectacle that delights visitors of all ages.

We’ll take you to a prime viewing location where the habitat is ideal for the greatest population of lightning bugs and we will equip you with firefly facts and help you understand how special they are. It’s a fleeting opportunity — the fireflies are here for a limited time each night and just a few weeks each summer. Almost impossible to truly capture in photos or videos, the sight will leave you awestruck.

Take a walking tour or hop on one of our guided golf carts or Historic New Harmony’s tram.

Watch a Thomas Say interpreter bring to life the esteemed entomologist who discovered and named Say’s Firefly in the 1820s. (Say’s Firefly was declared Indiana’s state insect in 2018.)

Bring the younger kids to enjoy firefly story time and the older kids to take a lesson with a nature illustrator.

And don’t miss the Pop-up Glow Dance Party! Glow sticks and great music = great fun! Plus, we’ll have photo ops, music and more!

It all begins at the Atheneum Visitors Center on Saturday.

Co-sponsored by One New Harmony and USI’s Historic New Harmony.
