The magic of fireflies will take center stage during a fabulous weekend in New Harmony, with activities both day and evening. Join us in this fun-filled celebration of Indiana’s state insect – Say’s Firefly!
The night skies, trees, and grassy areas in our beautiful town come alive with blinking bioluminescence for just a few weeks each summer. We’ve chosen the dark of the moon during the heat of July (ideal conditions!) to spotlight this enchanting spectacle.
As dusk gives way to dark, guides will lead firefly fans on foot or golf cart to the best spots for jaw-dropping views of tens of thousands of lightning bugs. (WEATHER PERMITTING!)
It is an unforgettable experience.
Stores, galleries and eateries around town will be hosting specials.
Plus, you can:
Enjoy a pub crawl.
Have fun creating glow in the dark crafts.
Enter the “Best Firefly Photograph” contest.
Let the kids make firefly art
Experience Glow Yoga or Glow Tai Chi.
Collect all the Firefly Fun Facts at merchants around town for a chance to win a prize.
Register for a class at Capers Glass Studio to make your own fused glass nightlight.
Shop for firefly-inspired merchandise.
Enjoy live music.
And much more!
Two other events going on in New Harmony provide lots more to do — Arts in Maclure Park on July 10, featuring artists of all types, from photographers to potters, jewelry makers, glass artists; and the New Harmony Music Festival & School with pop-up outdoor concerts filling the air with music, set for July 7-11.
Say’s firefly, named by Thomas Say in New Harmony in 1824, is Indiana’s state insect.
