While YOU determine the pace of your New Harmony experience, whether it’s leisurely or energetic, boredom will never be part of your adventure! You can’t run out of intriguing things to do here. New Harmony can be described as a vacationer’s paradise and a history-buff’s delight. For aficionados of vintage structures, make time to explore our impressive period architecture. New Harmony features 12 buildings from the early nineteenth century and 20 properties from the mid-nineteenth century era. Highlights include our museum, library, art gallery and Thralls Opera House.
Not sure where to begin? Stop by our New Harmony Visitor Center, also known as the Atheneum, for ideas, including an expertly-led tour of our historic sites. Guided tours begin at the Atheneum Visitors Center, which is conveniently located at the west end of North Street.
First of all, while a labyrinth will amaze, it is not a maze. It’s actually a path. And the winding, meandering nature of the path is designed to slow you down. The slower pace encourages meditation or reflective thinking. Any visit to New Harmony wouldn’t be complete without visiting both labyrinths in the community.
The Harmonist Labyrinth features lush, green shrubs arranged in a circular pattern. You’ll experience a thought-filled connection with nature as you make your way through it. Children and adults alike will benefit from the opportunity to metaphorically ease both your mind and body off the gas pedal. And at the center of maze, is a tranquil circular structure. You’ll find the easy-to-spot Harmonist Labyrinth at 1239 Main Street.
The New Harmony Cathedral Labyrinth is located at 309 North Street. This one is inspired by a labyrinth in Chartres, France. Its flat surface is made of gorgeous granite and features a center that’s shaped in the form of a flower. Your focus will be on your feet as you step plaintively around the intricate pattern within the circle. The labyrinth experiences alone make New Harmony, Indiana among the most unique and rewarding destinations ever.
Make time to visit New Harmony’s Working Men’s Institute at 407 Tavern Street. Founded in 1838 by William Maclure, it’s Indiana’s oldest continuously operating library. True to the utopian vision of Robert Owen and Maclure, its intention was to provide library services for the “average” and impoverished people of the area. Today, in addition to serving as a lending library, it also is home to an art gallery as well as the Harmonist History Museum. Admission is free.
