NATURAL DYES, COLORFUL TEXTILES IS A WORKSHOP THAT ENGAGES SENIOR LEARNERS (AGES 55+) IN CREATING A PALETTE OF NATURALLY DYED YARNS AND FABRICS USING PLANTS NATIVE TO INDIANA.
INSTRUCTOR PEGGY TAYLOR OF LOOM HALL TEXTILES AND RAINTREE COTTAGE TEXTILE SCHOOL IN NEW HARMONY WILL INTRODUCE NATURAL DYES AS A TRADITIONAL FOLK-ART FORM AND WILL GUIDE PARTICIPANTS THROUGH THE SUSTAINABLE CULTIVATION OF DYE PLANTS, THE HISTORY AND METHODS OF EXTRACTING PIGMENTS FROM DYE PLANTS, AND THE CREATION OF NATURALLY DYED WOOL YARNS AND FABRICS.

This children’s program consists of crafts and games from 19th-century America. Find out how to make a mini-Harmonist sundial and paper bonnets or top hats. Take part in a weaving project, play a game of graces and more. Along the way, kids will also learn about the history of New Harmony, including the Rappites who founded the town.
Paint your own unique masterpieces of New Harmony icons during a visit to Utopia. During the first painting class session, view the historic Harmonist Sundial and draw inspiration to create your own colorful sundial on canvas. During the second class session, view photos of the restored Harmonist Labyrinth and the Cathedral Labyrinth for painting inspiration. Both painting class will be instructed by local art teacher Peggy Taylor. Registration required one week prior to the class.

NOTE: Advanced Registration Required
In a single 2 ½ hour workshop, a New Harmony Soap master soap maker will lead you through the soap making process. Each student will make and take home their own 2-lb. batch of natural soap that they custom-scent with essential oils. PLUS… students will receive a reusable soap mold (wooden box + silicone liner + box lid). Total cost is $110 per person (all materials provided – you keep the mold). We’ll send you home with a great soap recipe along with the knowledge and confidence to make soap at home.

On the front lawn of the Working Men’s Institute at 407 Tavern Street, New Harmony, Indiana, you will find farmers and artisans selling fresh produce, herbs, flowers, eggs, baked goods, jams, jellies, art pieces, textiles, lotions, soap, and more.
