Witness this dazzling celestial event on top of the internationally acclaimed Atheneum Visitors Center from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm (CST) on Monday, April 8, 2024. Totality will begin at 2:01:47 pm and will last for 3 minutes, 54 seconds.

Nonrefundable VIP tickets may be purchased for $750 each and are limited to 8 tickets per person. Your purchase includes reserved parking, exclusive access to the Atheneum Visitors Center, rooftop balcony viewing, light refreshments and solar eclipse viewing glasses. The Harmonist Connection

Join author Michael Strezewski for The Harmonist Connection as he presents about Christoph Weber, Redware Potter of the Harmony Society, on Wednesday, November 15 at 6:00 p.m. CST/7:00 p.m. EST. The virtual presentation is in conjunction with Strezewski’s new book on the same subject. This event is free to the public.

Christoph Weber was the master potter of the Harmony Society, a German utopian group founded by religious dissenter George Rapp. Working from 1808 to 1853, Weber made a variety of household wares such as pitchers, storage jars, jugs, plates, and mugs. Weber’s pottery was distributed among the Society’s members and sold to their neighbors. Utilizing documentary sources, archaeological investigations, and analysis of surviving ceramics, Michael Strezewski, Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Southern Indiana, paints a detailed picture of Christoph Weber, the different types of pottery he manufactured, and his place in the early nineteenth century origins of the ceramics industry in the United States.

Michael Strezewski is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Southern Indiana. Dr. Strezewski has directed archaeological excavations in New Harmony since 2008, publishing numerous reports and articles on the Harmony Society.

“Art for Science’s Sake: Stalking John James Audubon” Film Screening and Discussion

Historic New Harmony will be hosting a film screening and discussion of the new documentary, “Art for Science’s Sake: Stalking John James Audubon,” at the Atheneum Visitors Center on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at 10:00 am.

This one-hour film explores the art and science of 19th century naturalist John James Audubon. Two University of Southern Indiana faculty members, Dr. Leigh Anne Howard and Dr. David Black, produced the documentary after spending 10 years researching Audubon’s complicated life and art. Audubon is best known for his life-size illustrations of birds in their natural habitats and for his monumental publication, “The Birds of America.” In the documentary, Dr. Howard and Dr. Black interview Audubon biographers and experts about his contributions to the study of birds and demonstrate the stages of production – from drawing to printing to publication – that resulted in “The Birds of America.”

“Art for Science’s Sake” won the award for Best Hoosier-made Film at the Victory International Film Festival in Evansville, Indiana, in September 2023.

The screening of “Art for Science’s Sake” will be followed by a discussion with the film’s producers. This event is free and open to the public. The Atheneum is located at 401 North Arthur Street in New Harmony. Liminal: Indiana in the Anthropocene Film Screening

Presented by Indiana Humanities, Liminal: Indiana in the Anthropocene is a meditative aerial film that illustrates our state as a microcosm of this new planetary epoch. It captures features of this global phenomenon within the boundaries of our state, collapsing the global into the local. This program is part of the Unearthed initiative, Indiana Humanities’ multiyear environmental theme that asks Hoosiers to consider how we affect the environment and how the environment affects us.

Historic New Harmony will be offering a free screening of Liminal: Indiana in the Anthropocene at 3:30 pm (CDT) on Saturday, August 12, 2023. Producer Zach Schrank will join us for a virtual Q&A session following the 54-minute film. We will also be displaying the accompanying exhibition of film stills at the Atheneum between June 29 and August 20, 2023.

The University of Southern Indiana’s Historic New Harmony Program will present Natural Dyes, Colorful Textiles, a workshop for senior learners (ages 55 and over) in August and September. This workshop will engage participants in creating a palette of naturally dyed yarns and fabrics using plants native to Indiana. Instructor Peggy Taylor of Loom Hall Textiles and Raintree Cottage Textile School in New Harmony will introduce natural dyes as a traditional folk-art form and will guide participants through the sustainable cultivation of dye plants, the history and methods of extracting pigments from dye plants and the creation of naturally dyed wool yarns and fabrics.

There will be two sessions held over consecutive weekends during August and September. The first session will be held on August 11, 12, 18, and 19, and the second session will be held on September 8, 9, 15, and 16. Classes will be held daily from 10:00 am to noon and 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm (CDT) at Historic New Harmony’s Double Log Cabin and the David Lenz House Garden, located at 324 North Street in New Harmony. The workshops are free, and all materials will be provided. Safe practices will be observed during classes, and participants should wear casual clothing that can get dirty and closed-toe shoes.

The registration deadline for the first session is Friday, August 4, and the deadline for the second session is Friday, September 1. Please provide accommodation needs upon registering.

Historic New Harmony Spring Hat Luncheon

Please “grace” us with your presence at Historic New Harmony’s Spring Hat Luncheon at the Rapp-Owen Granary. In addition to a keynote presentation on “The Three Graces” by Sandro Botticelli, participants will be treated to a fashion show by The Mews, live music, a silent auction (cash or checks only please), prizes for best hats, and bouquet giveaways! Tickets are $55 per person, which includes a $20 charitable gift with proceeds benefitting Historic New Harmony.

Tickets can be purchased online or, if you prefer, you may purchase tickets in person at the Historic New Harmony office at 603 West Street, New Harmony, Indiana 47631. Hear from New Harmony resident Kent Schuette and Old Economy Village volunteer, Joe Pulgini as they share the work that goes into maintaining a modern garden while drawing on the traditions of the Harmonists.

Kent Schuette is a professor emeritus of Purdue University, having served 45 years on the faculty in Purdue’s Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture. In 2020, Kent was asked to become the David Lenz House Garden manager, a position he continues to hold with the Colonial Dames in the State of Indiana.

Joe Pulgini has served on the Board of Directors for Old Economy Village since 2011. He has volunteered in the gardens for 8 years, working to keep the grounds beautiful and the harvest bountiful.
