I am glad and grateful that this painting and another painting, Journey, are part of Visualizing Spaces nhgca ! 💫 Check out what my work speaks of, as a visual response to the question, “Who is utopia for?”
March 12 – April 23, 2022

Posted withregram • nhgca New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art, University of Southern Indiana is proud to present Visualizing Spaces, a group exhibition featuring works by Robert Burnier, Su A Chae, Nasreen Khan, Diego Morales-Portillo, Brenda Mallory, Deb Sokolow, and Janie Stamm. The exhibition runs from March 12 – April 23, 2022, with gallery hours from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM Central, Tuesday – Saturday.
Building on New Harmony, Indiana history as the location of multiple utopian experiments, Visualizing Spaces examines themes around the search for utopia. The exhibition anticipates and engages the hopes, myths, failures, and fallout which occur in pursuing an ideal reality. Abstracted landscapes, impossible architecture, and resourced materials serve as both critique and creation of an idea of place. Centering around the question “who is utopia for?” Visualizing Spaces recognizes the past as what was lost, the present as what could have been, and the future as an imagined world for all.
Our first Public receptions will be held in conjunction with New Harmony’s Second Saturdays on Saturday, March 12 from 4-6 PM CT.
Visualizing Spaces supports the upcoming Social Alchemy Symposium that will be held in-person and online on April 10– 13, 2022. Social Alchemy is led by Indianapolis’ Big Car Collaborative.
This exhibition is made possible in part by the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana, and the Indiana Arts Commission, which receives support from the State of Indiana and the National Endowment for the Arts.
New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is a proud outreach partner of the University of Southern Indiana.

New Harmony, Day 2: We’re in love.
New Harmony in the sunlight is a different vibe than at night time. It’s alive, vibrant, and cozy. The sidewalks and side streets of New Harmony are my favorite, as they give friendly shade from the sun, but you also feel like you’re walking somewhere not in Indiana. New Harmony is Indiana’s Star Hollow from Gilmore Girls, and both me and Josh are ready to move here hahaha. Everywhere you go is an aesthetic, and it’s absolutely charming. Everywhere we went we met a friend or two, like this morning when we shared a table with a local over breakfast. All the local shop owners know us by name and always gave us tips and things to see, including: “if you find yourself in someone’s backyard, which is easy to do, just compliment their flowers and tell them you were mesmerized by them. You’ll make a friend!” 😄 That’s the feeling in New Harmony. It’s unique and you’ll make a friend. 🤍
1. The Main Cafe: stopped in for breakfast and a gentleman shared his table with us. He was a book collector and went to his store to grab a few to share with me. Sometimes you meet a kindred spirit in the most unlikely of places.
2. Aesthetic at Main Cafe
3-4We stopped at the local Farmer’s and Artist Market that runs until Octoberish. Working Men’s Institute is the oldest public library & museum in the state of Indiana. It’s unique and a must see.
5. I’m in love with all of the houses in New Harmony. Each house has flowers and plants outside.
6. Jane Owens memorial garden. New Harmony is the way it is due to this woman’s determination and preservation of this town. Starting the 40s/50s she started to preserve the buildings and town of New Harmony when it was a time that preserving the old wasn’t done much—and not done by a woman. The garden was calming and one of my favorite stops.
7-9. Roofless Church: beautiful. Peaceful. Meditative. Built in the 1960s it’s a place to worship, meditate, and reflect.
10. Another house. I’m obsessed.

Utopian dreams are close to mind during this uncertain time. One of those Utopias is in New Harmony, Indiana, a home to myriad labyrinths. Some made of stone, others with traditional hedges—but each a place for peaceful meditation. Today`s #travelmemory highlights a very special labyrinth that #TinyWorldTours had the opportunity to bring their guests to last September: this particular labyrinth was carved and shaped by the artist hands of Ben Nicholson, resident of New Harmony. It is maintained without any equipment, except for the feet of its creator and invited guests, as well as much patient nurturing. Truly a beautiful piece of experiential land art.
Book a visit to New Harmony during Shamrock Days March 17-19 and enjoy activities, special meals and drinks and more around town — and pick up an entry form at Old Mill Mart to document your search for our leprechauns! You have from 8:00 am Friday 3/17 to 5:00 pm on 3/26 to find them all and submit your entry. All correct entries will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win prizes — $100 for first prize, $50 for second prize. The drawing will take place on Monday evening, 3/20. The luck of the Irish be with you!

Many claim New Harmony is a utopia. Johann Georg Rapp and his Harmonie Society founded Harmonie on the Wabash in 1814. The Harmonists called the town their “neu Harmonie” having left their initial American home in Harmonie Pennsylvania. Its members were Separatists from the German Lutheran Church. This millennial society, waiting for Christ to come, build 180 buildings in the 10 years they were here and many are still standing today. They produced quality products including textiles, rope, barrels, tin ware, leather goods, candles, bricks and much more using the latest machinery and technology available. Because beverages were in demand in neighboring and river towns, wine, whiskey and beer were produced in large quantities. The daily production of whiskey was about 32 gallons and 500 gallons of beer were brewed every other day. The Harmonists applied their shared work ethic to achieve uncommon economic success, but in 1824 moved back to Pennsylvania and built their third town called Economy.
Robert Owen, a Welsh-born industrialist and social reformer, and William Maclure, an educator and the Father of American Geology, purchased the town from Father Rapp in 1825 and the second utopia was to be a new moral world based on equal education and equal social status. They brought the “Boatload of Knowledge” to New Harmony, navigating here with many scientists and educators including Entomologist and Conchologist Thomas Say. Years after Say’s death, his firefly became Indiana’s official state insect on March 23, 2018. Although their utopian vision eventually dissolved, the creative efforts of the Owen/Maclure period are still evident today.
The third utopia can be attributed to Jane Blaffer Owen (1915-2010). During her tine in New Harmony she brought modern architecture to the town, such as the Roofless Church, the Atheneum and many public art pieces. She created serenity with Tillich Park, Church Park and the Cathedral Labyrinth and has left behind a legacy all her own.
Utopia hasnt’ ceased to exist even today in this captivating little Southern Indiana town. New Harmony is full of life, offering all sorts of activities from one of a kind eateries, specialty shops, antiques, festivals, art, nature and history. Visit New Harmony and you’ll find yourself coming back to experience utopia for many years to come.
